Munich Christkindlmarkt – The original Christmas market made in Munich
The Christkindlmarkt
The Munich Christmas Market is actually the oldest Christkindlmarkt in town. The market is located around Marienplatz and from there up to the “Rindermarkt” and the St. Michael church. The highlight of course is the 30 meter high Christmas tree! In the evening it is illuminated with 2.500 candles!
The Christmas tree
Every year one community receives the honor to sponsor the giant tree and serve their own “Glühwein” within the city hall courtyard. The waiting time for a community is usually between 15 to 20 years and so the people from Burghausen were quite happy this year to set up the tree right in front of the city hall. Don’t miss out to stop by at their little stand and enjoy a delicious hot wine in a great atmosphere. Thanks to the city of Burghausen for this year’s beautiful Christmas tree!
The Munich city hall is also a good starting point to grab a drink and walk through the narrow streets, have a closer look at all the stands that offer a versatile range of Christmas products and get inspired for this year’s Christmas tree decoration.
Many of the little stands have a quite long tradition and their little family business is what makes it so truly unique. The “Federangel” from Michaela Linder for example (stand number 15). At her stand you will find lovely little angels consisting of feathers, straw stars and pearl jewelry. Everything is handmade of course. Go to “Federengel” website
You really should take a closer look because there is so much more to discover until 24.12 when the Munich Christkindlmarkt closes for 2017.If you get hungry we really can recommend to stop at the “Kleine Fischhütt’n” close to the Rindermarkt. Here you get flamed salmon in all varieties and it is super delicious + different from all the other yummy Chriskindlmarkt food 🙂 More information
Tipp: There is also a Christkindl Tram! The Munich tram is usually for public transport but in this one they serve Glühwein and gingerbread while cruising around the city 🙂 Starting point is Sendlinger Tor and you get the tickets right there. More information
