Fun blogger event discovering Munich’s street art and seeing the must-see MAGIC CITY exhibition

New York – Berlin – London … these are the cities that come to your mind when thinking of great and inspiring street art. But did you know that Munich is actually the birthplace of European graffiti?

Or that there are so many locations around the city where you can find amazing and diverse street art? Or that Munich’s city council actually asks famous street artists as Munich local hero Loomit to improve biking tunnels or bridges with their masterpieces? Well, we certainly didn’t know all that. Luckily, we were invited to a Munich street art biking tour and to visit the MAGIC CITY exhibition by Dr. Carsten Gerhard from Kulturmarketing München.

We met our guide former artist Martin Arz and fellow bloggers at the Friedensengel. Martin showed us the so-called “hall of fame” below the Friedensengel – the Isar bike trail tunnel with so many great pieces of different street art. We don’t know how many times we have cycled through this tunnel so far. And yes, we have realized that it is somewhat painted. But it never crossed our minds that the city of Munich actually planned this real life street art exhibition together with the famous Munich artist Loomit. The result is simply amazing. Take the time and get off your bike the next time you go through that tunnel and take a closer look at all this great images.

Our favorites are the two eyed watermelons on each side of the tunnel.

Our next stop was at the wall of the Praterinsel – here you can find a beautiful stencil of a young girl’s face. Stencils are blueprints that have been modelled by the artist before actually painting walls or piers and are also used by world-famous street artist Bansky.

After seeing some more masterpieces along the Isar trails our next stop was the Brudermühlbrücke. As the piers get repainted every few years by different artists, there is always something new to discover.  We especially liked the sneaker dinosaur “sole hunter”  by won abc, who is another famous street artist from Munich.

Our last stop was at the “hall of fame” at the Tumblingerstrasse – one of the few long walls in Munich where spraying, paining and airbrushing is legal. Watch out for the Bavarian bandit 🙂
